ETIQUETTE:

Always Rei & Osu to Sensei and seniors upon first meeting of the day.

Always rise when Sensei enters any area.

Always osu, upon entering and leaving the dojo.

When approaching Sensei or a senior, always Rei and say Osu before asking your question. If you do not get a response you should leave and wait until another time.

Never interrupt Sensei or Sempais if they are speaking to someone else.
(unless it's an emergency)

Never walk onto the training floor if Sensei and / or Sempais are training. Wait until you are told it is okay.

Never join in on any individual that is training that Sensei and / or Sempais may be instructing. This includes kata, especially if the kata is above your rank level. If you are invited, then you may join.

Never touch the obi (belt) of a senior.

If you see something dirty or something that needs attention, clean it or notify a senior.

When you are given directions or an order always sound-off loudly with osu.

When you are told to line-up or move to another location of the dojo, do it as fast as possible. (RUN!)

If you are asked a question by Sensei or a senior always rei and stand at
attention (yoi) until dismissed.

When speaking to a black belt or receiving instruction from a senior student always stand in yoi-dachi (ready stance).

If you are called upon in class to come to the front of the dojo and assist Sensei do it quickly and with honor. Avoid flinching or pulling away as it might result in injury.

Senior rank will give the order to line-up approximately 1 minute before the start of class. Remain standing in yoi-dachi until Sensei
presents himself (no matter how long).

Hachimaki (headbands) are a sign of true commitment to an art, vowing never to quit. Unless you are truly prepared to commit wholeheartedly to
Kyokushinkai there is to be no wearing of any headbands.

If you are late for class, dress and osu off the training area, kneel and mokuso facing away from class. When you are instructed to join the class, bow saying "Shitsurei shimasu" (excuse me for being late), quickly join class in the rear.

At the completion of class and after the dojo is cleaned, fold your dogi on the training floor area.

Treat all fellow students with respect, both in and out of the dojo.  Adhere to the Sempai / Kohai (senior / junior) relationship at all times while a member of the IKO. Avoid addressing a Sempei or Sensei by their first name while in the dojo. (Outside of class it is fine though)

Kyokushin Kata

Kata is a form of ritualized training in which patterned or memorized movements are done in order to practice a form of combat maneuvering.

Northern Kata

The northern kata have their origins in Shotokan karate, which Oyama learned while training under Gichin Funakoshi. The URA, or 'reverse' kata were developed by Oyama as an aid to developing balance and multi-direction combat skills. (some areas now phase out the prefix "sono").

Kyokushin unique Southern Kata

The kata Garyu is not taken from traditional Okinawan karate but was created by Mas Oyama and named after the village where he was born in Korea. The kata Yantsu is also often believed to be an original Kyokushin kata but there is enough evidence to suggest it finds its roots in Okinawa before Oyama created Kyokushin.

Ura Kata

Several kata are also done in "ura". This means that (in some instances) on every other step forward, the practitioner slides his back leg behind his front leg and around to the position it would have been in had he stepped forward. This in effect produces a spin on one foot.
